Funeral services for former Iolan Earl A. Wright Jr., whose death Tuesday at Atria Hearthstone Assisted Living in Topeka was reported in Wednesday’s Register, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Memorial Chapels with the Rev. Connie Smith officiating. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.
He was born Oct. 30, 1923, in Bloomington, Calif., the son of Earl A. and Ethel (Baker) Wright Sr. He grew up in Iola and graduated from Iola High School.
He attended Carthage Business College in Missouri and watch making school in Kansas City before enlisting in the U.S. Air Force.
On May 8, 1947, he married Maxine E. Thompson in Bronson. He served in World War II, the Korean War and Vietnam War before retiring in 1969 as a master sergeant with 25 years of military duty. After his retirement the couple returned to Iola where he worked 10 years for Gates Corporation. She died Oct. 9, 2000, and in 2005 he moved to Topeka to be near family. He enjoyed traveling, bowling and playing golf. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.
He is survived by a son, Ronnie and his wife Connie, Edmond, Okla.; a daughter, Jan Reichenberger and her husband Charlie, Topeka; a brother, Ben, Independence; six grandchildren: Aaron Wright, Amy Persechino and her husband Chris, Julie, Chelsey and Adam Reichenberger and Emily Hennes and her husband Joseph; and his friend, Beverly Browne, Great Bend.
