Roy Harris

Roy Lester Harris, 95, of Iola died Friday, July 17, 2009, at Allen County Hospital in Iola.
He was born Dec. 18, 1913, on a farm west of Iola in West Liberty community, the son of Charles F. and Nettie I. (Bauman) Harris. He attended Liberty Common School, graduated from Iola High School in 1932 and attended Iola Junior College.
On Dec. 18, 1934, he married F. Maxine Weldin. In 1936 they moved to western Kansas where they lived until returning to Iola in 1952. He worked as a refrigeration and appliance repairman and did electrical contracting. She died Feb. 18, 1990.
He enjoyed improving the family homestead and in later years television game shows, movies and working crossword puzzles.
He was a former member of Iola Optimist Club and was a member of Allen County Historical Society and Salem United Methodist Church.
He is survived by a son, Leon Harris and wife Ardith, Iola; a daughter, Sharon Harvey and her husband Ted, Effingham, S.C.; five grandsons: Gerry Harvey and his wife Diane, Newton, N.C., Jerry Harvey and hid wife Tammy, Cary, N.C., Jeffrey Harvey and hid wife Maria, Summerville, S.C., Randall Harvey and his wife Shari, Pocatello, Idaho, and David Harvey, Morrisville, N.C.; and seven great-grandchildren.
A grandson, Stuart Harris, died earlier.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Memorial Chapels in Iola.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Salem United Methodist Church west of Iola. The Rev. Gene McIntosh will officiate. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery in Iola.
Memorials to Salem United Methodist Church or Allen County Historical Society may be left at the funeral home.
