Robert Schmidt

Robert Junior “Teach” Schmidt, 77, a resident of Pinecrest Nursing Home in Humboldt, died Sunday, Nov. 29, 2009, at Allen County Hospital in Iola.
He was born May 9, 1932, in Burke, S.D., the son of John and Katy (Schroeder) Schmidt. He graduated from Burke High School and then served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. After his military duty he received a degree in education from South Dakota State University. He taught math for a number of years in Decatur, Neb.
He retired and moved to Sioux City, Iowa, where he married Victoria Lee Tebo on Dec. 31, 2001. They lived in Iowa before moving to Kansas. She survives at the home.
He enjoyed music and played the organ, guitar and harmonica.
Other survivors include a daughter, Tina Kellogg, Decatur, Neb., two stepsons, Rodney Stroud, Bronson, and Vernon VanHouten, Jr. Alvin, Texas; five stepdaughters, Sharon Barnhart, Chanute, Marie White, Sioux City, Iowa, Denise Snavely, Iola, Ann Johnson, Pleasanton, and Laura McCall, Humboldt; two brothers, Duane and Fred both of Gregory, S.D., a number of stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Florence and Vivian.
Family and friends will gather at noon, Wednesday, at Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Chapel in Iola to leave for graveside services at 1 p.m. in LaHarpe Cemetery.
