Phyllis Lewis

Phyllis J. Lewis, 66, of Yates Center died Saturday, July 25, 2009, at Overland Park Regional Medical Center.
She was born Oct. 17, 1942, in Rose, to William F. and Opal O. (Scales) Roth. She was graduated from Lyons High School in 1961. She then attended Sterling University, where she earned a bachelor of science degree in education. She went on to attend Texas Woman’s College, where she earned a master’s degree in education.
After her graduation from college she taught in several school districts in Texas ending with Gainesville before moving to Yates Center in 1977. She taught special education in the Yates Center School District until 2000 when she retired.
She was a member of National Education Association, Writers Guild and Yates Center’s Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma. She also was a member of New York Valley Church. She enjoyed spending time writing children’s books.
She is survived by her husband, Jim, of the home; two sons, Bill Bush, Halstead, and Bart Lewis, Lee’s Summit, Mo.; two daughters, Susan Steiner and her husband, Chad, Overland Park, and Jayme Lewis, Yates Center; a brother, Bill Roth, Bracefield, Ill.; six sisters, Marilyn Davis, Lyons, Sharon Regier, Elbing, Carol Engelhauzt, Marseilles, Ill., Nyla Gibbons, Emporia, Kathy Elliott, Emporia, and Rhonda Glazier, Denver; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist. Interment will follow in Kalida Cemetery. Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Campbell Funeral Home in Yates Center. Memorials to New York Valley Church or Woodson County Education Fund may be left at the funeral home.
