Newman services

Funeral services for Frances L. Newman of Iola, whose death Sept. 22 was reported in Friday’s Register, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Ward Chapel A.M.E. Church in Iola. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery in Iola.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Memorial Chapels in Iola.
She was born Aug. 25, 1944, in Topeka, the daughter of Charles and Magdaline (Payne) Lewis. She grew up in Topeka where she graduated from high school.
On April 19, 1969, she married William “Bill” Newman in Topeka. They made their home at Portland, Ore. She worked as a receptionist for Consolidated Freight in Portland. They moved to Iola in 1997.
She was a member of Ward Chapel A.M.E. Church and a Red Hat Society of Iola. She enjoyed sewing and crafts.
She is survived by her husband of the home; two daughters, Dawn Williams, Little Rock, Ark., and Michelle Simms, Temple, Texas; Many Step, adopted and play children; a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and five siblings, Bessie Chiles and Theron Lewis, Portland, Martha Amado and her husband, Tony, and Ellvia Wesley and her husband, David, all of Topeka, and Arthur Lewis and his wife, Mary Ann, Lake Charles, La.
A daughter, Estella (Baby Faye) Newman, and three sisters, Charlene Gardenhire, Wanda King and Becky Dansby, died earlier.
