Jean Lonergan

Jean Olive Lonergan, 95, a lifelong resident of Leavenworth County died Thursday morning Oct. 8, 2009, at her Leavenworth home.
She was born Jean Olive Aaron on Aug. 6, 1914, in Leavenworth, the daughter of John Patrick and Eleanor Vista (Frank) Aaron of the Boling community. She attended rural Central Grade School and was a 1932 graduate of Immaculata High School. She earned a bachelor of science degree from Saint Mary College.
Jean married Michael Roth Lonergan at Sacred Heart Church in Leavenworth on Aug. 23, 1938. He preceded her in death on Dec. 25, 1986. Prior to her marriage Mrs. Lonergan taught four years in elementary schools in rural Leavenworth County. She was also an elementary school teacher in the Fort Leavenworth School System from 1953 to 1976. While there she served a term as president of the Fort Leavenworth Education Association.
She was a member of Immaculate Conception Church for over 71 years and was active in the Altar Society, serving twice as president. She was a member of the Saint Mary College (University of Saint Mary) Alumni and Women’s Associates. She served many years in the St. John Hospital Guild, volunteering many hours in the hospital gift shop and she served two terms as guild president. She was named St. John Hospital volunteer of the year in 1989.
Jean was a member of the Leavenworth Association of Retired School Personnel. For many years she was a member of the Leavenworth Country Club and played an active part in the LCC Women’s Golf Association. She also was an avid bridge player and belonged to several bridge clubs.
Along with her husband she was a lifetime member of the Democratic Party and was active in the Democratic Women’s Club of Leavenworth.
She is survived by her two sons, Michael Roth (Marianne) Lonergan of The Villages, Fla., and Lee Patrick (Lucinda) Lonergan of Iola, Kan.; a daughter, Martha (H. James) Allen of Leavenworth; eight grandchildren, John Patrick (Monica) Lonergan of Peoria, Ill., Julianne (Jason) Edwards of Cibolo, Texas, James Lonergan “Lon” Allen of Dallas, Texas, Meredith Timmons of Leavenworth, Michael John (Cara) Lonergan of Overland Park, Kan., Katherine Jean “Katy” Lonergan of Mission, Kan., Ryan Patrick (Katie) Lonergan of Olathe, Kan. and Mary Colleen “Molly” Lonergan of Gardner, Kan.; her great-grandchildren, Jacob Michael Lonergan, Grace Erin Lonergan, Elizabeth Marie Lonergan, Caleb Patrick Lonergan, Austin Anderson Bolt, Emily Kate Lonergan, Anthony John Lonergan, Joseph Michael Lonergan, Kathleen Brigitte Edwards, Dylan John Edwards and Olivia Jeanette Timmons; her niece Lyn Aaron Dixon of Charlotte, N.C.; and nephew, J. Patrick Aaron, of San Francisco, Ca.; and many cousins and friends.
In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by her brother, Frank Edwin Aaron; her sister Grace L. Cellier; her great-granddaughter, Avery Elizabeth Lonergan; and a nephew, Michael Aaron.
The family will receive friends at the R.L. Leintz Funeral Home from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 12, 2009. A vigil service will be begin at 6 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct 13, at Immaculate Conception Church with Rev. David McEvoy, O.Carm., as celebrant. Burial will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Immaculata High School, Immaculate Conception Church, Saint John Hospital Building fund, the University of Saint Mary or to the donor’s choice.
