Gary Townsend

Gary Wilson Townsend, 72, of Burlington died Sunday, Oct. 18, 2009, at Kansas City Hospice House in Kansas City, Mo., following a battle with cancer.
He was born Dec. 12, 1936, in Neosho Falls, to Arthur M. and Ruth I. Wilson Townsend. He spent his childhood in Neosho Falls and graduated from Neosho Falls High School. In 1954 he moved with his family to Iola.
On July 7, 1967, he and Shirley Marie Burris were married at Tulsa, Okla. They lived in Ottawa for several months before moving to Burlington in 1968. He worked as a pipe fitter and welder for many years in various locations. He had been a member of the Pipe Fitters-Welders Union Local No. 441 in Topeka for the past 40 years.
He liked hunting, fishing and camping. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Burlington.
He is survived by his wife; a son, Travas Wayne, Columbia, Mo.; four daughters, Rhonda Lea Adams, Peru, Tammy Lorrene Kurtz and her husband, Gary, Nevada, Mo., Karol Kalene Adams, Overland Park, and Crystal Annette Vaughn and her husband, Dirk, Houston, Texas; seven grandchildren, Lee Masters, Shalene Gordon, Kortney Post, Kaci Kurtz, twins Bennett and Sydney Vaughn and Emma Adams; a great-granddaughter; a brother, Richard “Dick” and his wife, Mari, Burlington; and two sisters, Shirley Gibbs and her husband, Allen, Albany, Ore., and Gynith Ellis and her husband Darrell, Iola.
A brother, Ronald D. “Ronnie,” died June 8, 1997.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Burlington. Burial will be in Baker Cemetery, west of Burlington.
Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Jones Funeral Home in Burlington.
