Florence Carlson

Florence Mae Carlson, 84, formerly of Elsmore, died Oct. 6, 2009 at Heritage Care Center, Chanute.
She was born May 13, 1925, in Chanute, to Arthur and Golda Krone. She married Leonard M. Carlson on June 5, 1955, and they lived and farmed near Elsmore for nearly 48 years. He preceded her in death on March 30, 2003.
She was graduated from Chanute High School, Neo-sho County Community College and Pittsburg State Teachers College with a degree in elementary education. Over the years she taught at Maple Grove Country School, Sorghum Valley, Zillah, Chanute Lincoln Elementary, Erie Elementary School, Elsmore Grade School and Murray Hill Elementary School. She also worked at the University of Kansas development preschool in Chanute.
She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Chanute, until her marriage. She became a member of Friends Home Lutheran Church, Savonburg. She taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, sang in the choir and worked in the women’s organizations of the church. She was a member of Elsmore EHU and enjoyed a lifelong relationship with members of the “Old Hen’s Club.”
The Carlsons encouraged and supported their children and grandchildren in their spiritual development, educations, sports, drama, music and 4-H. She was a talented artist, avid reader and an excellent cook.
Survivors include her children, Becky Carlson, Iola, Anna Marie Prockish and husband, Tim, Salina, Dr. Eric Arthur Carlson and wife, Jill, Manhattan, and Sarah Lee Bannister, Iola; a sister, Mary Erickson, Chanute; and grandchild-ren, Adam and Kimberly Prockish; Carissa, Monica, Lee, Jacob and Lauren Carlson; and Jasmine, Trilby and Olivia Bannister.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Norma Cooper and Lillian Allison.
Visitation is from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Penwell-Gable Johnson Chapel, Chanute. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Friends Home Lutheran Church, Savonburg. Memorials may be made to Friends Home Lutheran Church.
