Eugene Westerman

Eugene E. “Gene” Westerman, 79, of Piqua died Friday, Aug. 14, 2009, at Coffey County Hospital in Burlington.
He was born June 6, 1930, to Bernard G. and Anna E. (Link) Westerman in rural Piqua. He attended Plum Creek School for four years and Piqua Catholic School. He graduated from Iola High School.
After high school he moved to Denver, Colo., and was employed at Gates Rubber Company. He joined the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War.
On Sept. 22, 1952, he married Virginia M. Heiman at a double wedding ceremony at St. Martin’s Catholic Church in Piqua with Conrad Heiman, brother of the bride and his wife, Rose Ellen Cavanaugh.
In 1963 the family moved from Denver to rural Piqua. He worked for Ollie Kreimer and farmed.
He was a member of St. Martin’s Catholic Church and lifelong member of the Piqua Knights of Columbus where he served two terms as grand knight. He served Woodson County as commissioner for 14 years. He liked to play cards, garden and go fishing.
He is survived by his wife of the home; a son, Ralph, Piqua; two daughters, Jenifer Smail and her husband, Kenny, Piqua, and Vicki Audley, Wichita; three brothers, Alvin, Iola, Larry and his wife, Cheryl, Humboldt, and Daryl Westerman and his wife, Judy, Piqua; two sisters, Dorothy Konen and her husband, Gerald, Little River, and Linda Sandy and her husband, Chuck, Overland Park; seven grandchildren, Ryan and Jennifer Smail, Maple Lake, Minn., Erica Smail, Overland Park, Lindsey and Travis Skillman, Burlington, Shannon and Aaron Piotrowski, Memphis, Tenn., and Mike, Brenna and Sarah Audley, Wichita; six great-grandchildren; and 38 nieces and nephews.
A sister, Marlene Lampe Sharp, died earlier.
Visitation will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Memorial Chapels in Iola.
Rosary and funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Martin’s Catholic Church in Piqua. The Rev. Robert B. Wachter will be celebrant.
