Ed Marquis

Ed Marquis, 84, formerly of Iola, died Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2009, at St. Mary’s Hospice in Tucson, Ariz. as the consequence of a massive stroke.
He was born on May 18, 1925, in Kansas City, Mo. After graduating from Southwest High School he served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II.
After the war he enrolled at the University of Kansas and was graduated in 1950. He was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity.
He moved back to Kansas City and began working for the Kansas City Stockyard Company. It was at this time that he met and married Suzanne Hoyt of Iola. They were married 55 years at his death.
In 1957, the family moved to Iola. Mr. Marquis bought the M&M Meat Pack-ing/Iola Meat Processors Company and operated it successfully for the next 25 years.
Since retiring in 1984, Ed and Suzy have spent most of their time in Tubac, Ariz, but always considered Iola home.
Commenting on his father’s death, his son, Hoyt, wrote: “Our dad enjoyed all the things most guys like to do. A good crossword puzzle, a great bridge or gin game, lots of golf, a good cigar and a martini at 5. He also loved spending time with the family at their summer cottage on Lake Charlevoix in Northern Michigan. But most of all he loved Suzy.”
Ed was a member of the Allen County Country Club, Wolf Creek Golf Links and the Tubac Country Club.
Ed is survived by his wife; a brother, Skip; daughters, Linda Maness and her husband, Bill, Wichita, and Jennifer Armstrong, Bucyrus; his sons, John and his wife, Lisa, Prairie Village, and Hoyt and his wife, Debbie, Leawood; and grandchildren Emily, Joe, Kristen, Kaitlin, Allison, Sarah and Alex.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sept. 12 at the St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Nogales, Ariz. The family suggests contributions to the St. Andrews Childrens Clinic, 75 Calle De Las Tiendas, Suite 127B, Green Valley, Ariz. 85614.
