Darlene Gumfory

Darlene M. Gumfory, 71, Iola, died Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2009, at Allen County Hospital in Iola.
Darlene was born April 24, 1938, in Hood River, Ore., the daughter of Raymond F. and Lena P. (Lowe) Whitworth. At a young age, she moved with her family to Neosho County, where she grew up and was graduated from Stark High School.
She married Derrell Johnson and they later divorced. She completed her nurses training in Independence.
On Jan. 1, 1966, she married Leland “Bon” Gumfory and they made their home in Iola. She helped her husband in the operation of the Zero Locker Plant for several years. She then worked as a licensed practical nurse in area nursing homes, including Pinecrest and Windsor Place, before ill health forced her retirement in 2003.
She was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church and Beta Sigma Phi.
Her husband, of the home, survives, as do two sons, Rick Johnson, Iola, and Jeff Johnson, Springdale, Ark.; two daughters, Rose Johnson, Iola, and Maxalene Gumfory, Iola; three brothers, Dale Whitworth, Houston, Dick Whitworth, Miami, Okla., and Danny Whitworth, Bull Head City, Ariz.; a sister, Diane Richwine, Erie; 15 grandchildren, Nikki, Tiffany, Shawna, Michael, Janie, Chris, Ben, Katie, Sarah, Rebecca, Teresa, Kimberly, Amy, Jessica and Holly; and 11 great-grandchildren
She was preceded in death by a son, Bryan Johnson, a brother, Dwaine Whitworth, and a sister, Donna Goff.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Memorial Chapels in Iola. Rev. Lloyd W. Houk will officiate. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery in Iola.
