Coletta Sprague

Coletta Sprague, 79, Lone Elm, died Friday, Dec. 25, 2009, at Menorah Medical Center in Overland Park.
She was born June 25, 1930 in Wichita, the daughter of Thomas E. and Anna E. (Haffey) O’Mara. She grew up in Colony and graduated from high school there in 1948. She earned her teaching certificate from Emporia State Teachers College. She taught school for a few years in a country school near Colony and at Lone Elm.
On Oct. 9, 1951, she married Vernon Sprague in Kincaid.
She was a homemaker and did some substitute teaching after her children went to school. She was a member of Advancers Club and South Lone Elm “15” Club and was active in 4-H, serving as a sewing project leader for many years. She also volunteered at the Kincaid Fair for more than 40 years, serving many of those as a 4-H assistant superintendent.
She was an accomplished seamstress, making all of her daughters’ wedding dresses. She also taught her daughters and many girls from the neighborhood how to sew. She enjoyed bowling, square dancing, gardening, canning and watching Kansas University basketball.
She is survived by her husband of the home; three daughters, Marilyn Thexton and her husband, Harold, Colony, Sandra Adams and her husband, Tom, Kincaid, and Diane Calahan and her husband, Darrel, Colony; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a brother, John O’Mara and his wife, Kay, Iola; and a sister, Aretta Nowlin, Fort Worth, Texas.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Carol McGhee, in 1993; a brother, Tom O’Mara; and a sister, Valetta Stanley.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Feuerborn Family Funeral Service Chapel in Garnett. Interment will follow in Colony Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
