Billy Solander

Billy Edward (Soapy) Solander, 82, died Friday, Aug. 28, 2009, at Allen County Hospital in Iola.
He was born Jan. 16, 1927, in Yates Center, the son of Roy C. and Jennie G. (Pearl) Solander. He attended Yates Center schools and lived in the house where he was born all of his life.
He served in the Army during World War II and was a member of Yates Center Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 3739 and American Legion Post No. 13.
On Sept. 16, 1950, he married Emalee C. Culver at St. Joseph Church in Yates Center. He worked as a mechanic in numerous garages in Yates Center, and in later life opened a garage at his home.
He is survived by his wife of the home; six children, James and his wife, Sandy, Chanute, Janet Jensen and her husband, David, Milton, Fla., Donald and his wife, Teena, Gas, and Mary McNeil, Jean Dempsay, and Sarah Petit and her husband, Rocky, all of Yates Center; 15 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three sisters, Lenore Solander, Amy Riser and Helen Head, and three brothers, Clifford, John O. and Robert.
Graveside services were at 2 p.m. today at Yates Center Cemetery. The family suggests memorials to Friends for Life or Woodson County Education Fund, which may be sent in care of Campbell Funeral Home, P.O. Box 188, Yates Center, Kan. 66783.
