‘Bill’ Johnson Jr.

Billy Dean “Bill” Johnson Jr., 61, of Independence died Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2009, at St. John’s Medical Center in Tulsa, Okla.
He was born Nov. 5, 1947, in Iola, the son of Billy Dean Sr. and Velma (Connor) Johnson. He attended Iola schools and later attended Independence Community College, Allen County Community College and Neosho County Community College.
He was employed by O’Malley Equipment Company and FedEx as a truck driver.
In 1966 he married Brenda Peters in Iola. The couple were later divorced. On Aug. 6, 1988, he married Judy (George) Cross in Chanute.
She survives at the home, as do four daughters, Bridget and her husband, Kevin Golay, and Brandi and her husband, Kerry Ranabargar, Chanute, Bethany and her husband, Darren Alexander, Olathe, and Nikki Cross and her husband, Lloyd Slapar; his mother and stepfather, Velma and John Hartman, Columbus; a brother, Alan, Columbus; two sisters, Patricia Collins, Monett, Mo., and Gloria Brown, Gladstone, Mo.; and seven grandchildren, Ethan Golay, Wyatt Golay, Jake Johnson-Ranabargar, Elijah Johnson-Mein, Dawsyn Alexander, Owen Alexander and Kylar Slapar.
His father died earlier.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Penwell-Gabel Webb & Rodrick Chapel in Independence. The Rev. Rick Qualls, pastor of First Baptist Church in Chanute, will officiate. Inurnment will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home, 306 W. Main St., Independence, from 12:30 p.m. until service time on Wednesday.
Memorials to St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Tulsa, Okla., may be left at the funeral home.
