‘Betty’ Rettmann

Former Humboldt resident Elizabeth “Betty” Victoria Rettmann, 86, died Monday, July 13, 2009, in Wichita.
She was born Aug. 30, 1922, in Humboldt, to Herman and Victoria (VanNice) Crawford, the oldest of nine children.
She attended a one-room school in DeWitt through eighth grade. Her family moved to Texas in 1936 and she graduated from Cayuga High School in 1940.
She attended Sam Houston State Teachers College in Huntsville, Texas. She graduated from Pittsburg State Teachers College with a bachelor of arts in elementary education. She earned her master’s degree from Kansas University in 1961.
She taught two years at Apple Pie Elementary School in rural Douglas County. She then taught two years at Overbrook Country School. She returned to Humboldt and taught third grade for 40 years.
She was a member of Grace Southern Baptist Church in Iola. She met her husband, Alvin, at church. They were married in 1970. He died in 1998.
Survivors include brothers Richard, Riverside, Calif., Joseph “Joe” and Carol Crawford, Reno. Nev., and Floyd and Roberta “Bobbie” Crawford, Wichita; and sisters Neva and Charles “Chick” Stout, Wichita, and Lola Mae Colburn, Belleville, Ill.
Sisters Lavonne, 6, and Charlotte Irene, infant, and an infant brother, Rufus Herman Crawford Jr., died earlier.
Funeral Service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Grace Southern Baptist Church in Iola. Burial will follow at 1:30 p.m. in DeWitt Cemetery in Humboldt.
