Youth drama classes begin Monday morning

Openings still exist for youths to participate in the summer theater workshops sponsored by Iola Community Theatre.
The two-week program introduces youngsters to acting and improvisational methods with games and activities. The method works so well, that by the second week participants “are actually acting and they don’t even realize it,” said program director, Tara Gray.
Two sessions exist: First- through fifth-graders meet from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Monday through June 26, followed by middle schoolers meeting from 10 a.m. to noon. To enroll, meet a few minutes early at the ICT Warehouse, 203 S. Jefferson. Cost is $30, and includes a T-shirt. Culmination of the program will result in a play directed by the students themselves.
Gray was most recently the music teacher for the past eight years at Lincoln Elementary School. She resigned at the end of the school year to take a position as high school choral director at Ottawa Public Schools. It was a tough decision, Gray said, but one that works better for her and her family who reside in Garnett.
