YC man dies in flood

QUINCY, Kan. (AP) — Authorities Tuesday found the body of Joshua Smith, 20, of Yates Center, whose truck was swept off the road during flooding in southeast Kansas.
Greenwood County Undersheriff Charles Bitler said emergency workers recovered Smith’s body at 6:30 a.m. Tuesday in a farm field after floodwaters receded.
Smith was among three occupants in a truck that was swept off a road west of Quincy on Monday night. The two survivors called 911, setting off a search for the missing man.
The flooding was the result of storms that started inundating the region Sunday, filling ditches, pushing creeks out of their banks and forcing rescues and evacuations.
The Kansas Division of Emergency Management announced Tuesday it would start staffing its emergency operations center in 12-hour shifts to monitor flooding. The Kansas National Guard also activated its joint operations center in the event assistance is needed.
Some roads remained closed midday Tuesday in Bourbon County in southeast Kansas.
