Small town living for Elsmore Day

On Saturday, downtown Elsmore will be alive with 40th annual Elsmore Farm-Town Day events sponsored by Elsmore Ruritan Club.
Festivities begin at 8 a.m. and include a dunk tank, Marmaton Valley High School FFA petting zoo, arts and crafts booths in the community building and concessions with homemade ice cream and bake sale items at the fire station.
“Small Town Living” is the theme of the parade at 11 a.m. Grand marshals will be John and Annie Vogel. The Vogels have lived and served the citizens of the area for more than 20 years. They own, a high-speed Internet service, and he is pastor of Evangelical Covenant Church, west of Savonburg.
At noon barbecued pork will be served in the community building. In addition to the meat dish, diners will enjoy potato salad, baked beans, bread and a drink. Cost of the meal is $6 for adults, $4 for children 5 to 12, and $2 for children 4 and under.
Kids games will begin at 2 p.m. and a baby contest for children one year old and under will be at 3 o’clock. At 4 p.m. bingo games will be in the community building. A free bean feed starts at 5 p.m. People attending the bean feed should bring their own table service or kettle. Cornbread will be sold at the concession stand.
Free merchant drawings will be held following the bingo games. Winners must be present to claim prizes. One dollar tickets will be sold all day for cash prize drawings. After the merchant drawings, winners of the cash prizes of $100, $50 and $25 will be drawn. Winners of the cash drawing need not be present to win.
The 26 members of Elsmore Ruritan Club sponsor Elsmore Day the second Saturday in September as a service to the citizens of the area. Elsmore Day is the club’s biggest fund raiser of the year. Proceeds go toward club projects, which include donations to Marmaton Valley High School activities, college scholarships, Christmas gift bags for senior citizens and school children, sponsoring Allen County Fair trophies, helping clean up at Allen-Bourbon County Lake, aiding the city of Elsmore in its playground project, helping the elderly with household chores and providing them transportation, sponsoring a dog and cat vaccination clinic and serving homemade ice cream to the residents of Moran Manor during National Nursing Home Week.
In addition to the Elsmore Farm-Town Day celebration the club’s annual golf tournament will be Sept. 26 at Prairie Ridge Golf Course, 15900 U.S. 59 in Erie. The three-person scramble will tee off at 9 a.m. Entry fee is $40 per person with meal and cart included.
