Schmidt to speak

Sen. Derek Schmidt will deliver the keynote address Saturday morning as part of Veterans Day ceremonies in Iola.
Schmidt will speak at 11 o’clock, followed by a balloon release in honor of Kansans declared killed or missing in action.
The Rev. Lloyd Houk will sing, and the Rev. Robert Wachter will lead the invocation.
Immediately following Schmidt’s comments, members of the Iola Elks will host a bean feed.
A Blackhawk helicopter out of Forbes Field in Topeka will land in a vacant area just south of Orscheln Farm and Home, 1918 N. State St. Visitors will be allowed to sit at the controls and check out the chopper’s various features.
At noon, the Blackhawk will take off and head east along U.S. 54 to mark the start of Iola’s 20th annual Veterans Day parade.
Organizer Alfred Link said at least six marching bands will be part of the cavalcade, as will a large trailer to carry any veteran who wishes to take part.
Those wishing to be a part of the parade are urged to contact Link at 365-7149 or Wanda Lytle, 365-3545.
