Betty Hawley took an extra moment to reflect upon passing the flag pole at Iola High School Wednesday. So did several others.
The American flag displayed for Veterans Day was loaned to the school by Hawley.
It carries special significance for the English in-structor.
It was flown during a combat mission in August on board a OH-58D Kiowa Warrior helicopter piloted by Hawley’s son, Army Capt. Anthony Hanson.
Hanson, a 1991 IHS graduate, is serving in Afghan-istan as part of Task Force Saber, the proverbial “tip of the spear” in the aerial fight against insurgents in Af-ghanistan’s southern pro-vince of Kandahar.
A 14-year veteran, Hanson is stationed in Af-ghanistan until April.
He previously served one year in Iraq in 2006 and 2007.
When not serving overseas, Hanson is stationed with the 82nd Airborne in Fort Bragg, N.C.
