Nelson new director

Jason Nelson

Jason Nelson is Allen County’s new Emergency Medical Services director.
Allen County commissioners selected Nelson Tuesday morning, after interviews with him and two other candidates.
Nelson is a nine-year veteran of emergency medical service and earned paramedic certification from Garden City Community College while working with ambulance service in Ulysses, starting in 2003.
He was born and raised in the Wamego area and graduated from rural Rock Creek High School in 1994. After attending Brown Mackie College in Salina on a baseball scholarship, he worked as a pipefitter for six years.
“During that time, I was a volunteer with emergency medical service, liked it and decided that’s what I wanted to do,” Nelson said.
While at Ulysses, Nelson met his wife, Sherri, who is from the Hiawatha area and where they then settled.
Nelson has worked for Allen County EMS since November 2008. The Nelsons have two daughters, Kenzie, 16 months, and Tylie, 4 months.
They will move to Allen County soon. “We’re looking for a place,” he said.
Nelson officially becomes director June 1. He will replace Nathan Cunningham, who has been interim EMS director since Elaine Dugan resigned early this year.
