He captures ‘cuts of light’

Pass along Deer Creek on most any sunny day, and you’ll see why the small waterway north of Iola is one of Steve Greenwall’s favorite places.
The majesty of watching the sun’s rays pour past the thick underbrush creates what Greenwall calls “cuts of light.”
“That’s my forte,” Greenwall said of depicting shadows. “I just like the composition.”
A watercolor Greenwall created, appropriately titled “Deer Creek,” garnered the Iolan the first place prize last month in the Topeka Art Guild’s “Kansans Paint Kansas” art competition.
Greenwall won in the professional division, beating out 46 other finalists. In addition to a cash prize, two of Greenwall’s works, “Deer Creek Bank” and a pastel drawing of Coal Creek near Humboldt, titled “Downstream,” will remain on display at the Topeka Art Guild’s gallery at the Fair-
