Bee bid falls short

Iolan Clara Wicoff fell short in her bid Wednesday to make it to the semifinal round of the Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee.
The 11-year-old Jefferson Elementary School fifth-grader competed in the first three rounds of the national spelling bee in Washington, D.C., and correctly spelled the words “tolerable” and “opprobrious.”
She is the daughter of Iolans Joel and Lisa Wicoff.
Contestants also were asked to spell 50 words using a computer keyboard. Only 25 of the 50 spellings counted toward each speller’s preliminary score.
Of the record 293 participants, only 41 moved on to today’s nationally televised semifinal round.
The spelling champion will be crowned tonight.
