Steve Orcutt understands the start of the school year can be a stressful time for young students.
“Ever since I was 5, going back to school would start as a stressful time,” he said. “But that usually lasted until the first time I was out on the playground with the other kids.”
With that in mind, Orcutt has planned a giant back-to-school pool party for all USD 257 elementary students.
Orcutt, former art instructor, is teaming with Lyle Kern to welcome students in K-5 with their “Big Moonlight Splash.”
Orcutt and Kern will greet youngsters from 8 to 10 p.m. Friday at the Iola Municipal pool for what Orcutt described as a “back-to-school rockin’ swim-fest.”
Admission to the pool is free. Orcutt also has an assortment of gifts that will be given away each time Kern plays the “Jaws” theme over the pool’s sound system. Kern will also play an assortment of Beach Boys classics and other summer tunes.
“I don’t want the start of the school year to be stressful for the students ever again,” Orcutt said. “That’s why I’ve vowed to do a pool party like this every year for the rest of my life.”
Flyers announcing the pool party were put in enrollment packets Wednesday and today, “but I’m always afraid many parents won’t open them,” Orcutt said.
